Pirate Bumbo

Rum-forward drink with water, sugar, and a sprinkle of nutmeg. Enjoy it with Pirate Guacamole and some plantain chips

City/Region: Panama

Time Period: 17th Century

This is a little fancier version of grog with the additions of piloncillo and nutmeg. It’s not too sweet and the nutmeg is really nice. They probably didn’t have access to ice in 17th century Panama, but you should add some if you want to. I might like it even more cold.

Ingredients:

  • 2 ounces rum*
  • 4 ounces water
  • 1 teaspoon piloncillo* or granulated sugar
  • Sprinkle of nutmeg

*See notes below.

Instructions:

  1. Stir all of the ingredients together in a mixing glass.
  2. Serve it forth.

Notes

  • You can find rum and other liquors used on the channel in my curated collection at Curiada.
  • Piloncillo is an unrefined sugar that has lots of layers of flavor like caramel and molasses and is sold in a cone shape that you grate to use.
